Our new cooking pastes are in flexible pouches made using recyclable PE material. At the moment, you can recycle this type of packaging in supermarkets with a drop-off scheme, but we’re hoping that as local refuse collections improve you’ll be able to recycle them from home too.
To recycle your cooking paste pouches, just give them a rinse, dry them off and take them into a local shop with a drop-off point. You can search your postcode here for the nearest drop-off point.
We chose this type of packaging for a few reasons and after a lot of research into our options. Firstly, the pouches require less energy and resources to produce than glass. And the squishy shape also means we can transport more at a time, which reduces carbon emissions during delivery.
The packs are printed using digital printing technology on carbon-neutral HP printers, which uses less energy and has a smaller carbon footprint than traditional methods. We’ve also used polymer-based inks, which produce less hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) and consume less energy than solvent-based or UV-curable inks, which are used in traditional flexible packaging.
But we’re also aware that every type of packaging comes with certain compromises, and we want to make sure the environmental impact of our pastes is as low as possible. Right now there isn’t a compostable or biodegradable film available for longer-life cooking pastes of this type, but if a better solution becomes an option, we’re very open to making changes for future batches.
